DESCRIPTION
This Is Where We Talk Things Out by Caitlin Marceau, author of Palimpsest: A Collection of Contemporary Horror follows the gut-wrenching journey of Miller and her estranged mother, Sylvie, who have always had a tense relationship.
After Miller's father dies, she agrees to a girls' vacation away from the city to reconnect with the only family she has left. Although she’s eager to make things work, Miller can’t help but worry that her mother is seeing their countryside retreat as a fun weekend getaway instead of what it really is: a last-ditch effort to repair their relationship.
Unfortunately, that quickly becomes the least of Miller’s problems.
Sylvie's trapped in the past and if Miller's not careful, she will be too. A cross between Stephen King's Misery and Stephanie Wrobel's Darling Rose Gold, This Is Where We Talk Things Out explores the horror of familial trauma, mother-daughter relationships, and what happens when we don't let go.
PRAISE FOR THIS IS WHERE WE TALK THINGS OUT
"In her debut novella, This is Where We Talk Things Out, Caitlin Marceau has crafted one of the most horrifying reads of the year. A fast-paced plot and increasing tension from the first chapter made the pages fly by, while her gift for making readers care about her characters in such a brief story raised the stakes all the more. With relatable scenarios that dug ever deeper into danger, I raced to the end, too tense to keep going, but impossible to put down."
—Laurel Hightower, author of Crossroads and Below.
"Emotionally claustrophobic and unnerving. Takes dysfunctional family to a whole new level."
—Ali Seay, author of To Offer Her Pleasure.
“This is Where We Talk Things Out by Caitlin Marceau is a winter storm knocking on your door, and the chills it has brought are not ones you can escape. If Misery, “A Rose for Emily”, and Mommie Dearest had a lovechild, here it is. A genuinely upsetting horror novella that holds nothing back. This page-turner will have you devouring the book in a day or two, but you won’t be able to stop thinking about it for weeks. Marceau is a dynamite force to keep an eye on.”
— Sara Tantlinger, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Devil’s Dreamland.
“Marceau is one of the most chilling new voices in horror.”
— Lindy Ryan, author of Bless Your Heart.

Miller had been estranged from her mom for a few years. When her mom starts harassing her, Miller feels she has no choice but to go on a weekend getaway her mom suggests. Could they possibly mend some fences?
Miller's mom's narcissism kicks in as soon as she gets into the car. Her mom arrived 15 minutes early, but complained that Miller was late.
When they arrive at a cabin in the mountains, Miller is thrust into a time capsule from her youth. It's unsettling and disturbing. There's an insane snowstorm coming. Miller is seriously second guessing her decision. Her mom goes from sickeningly sweet to narcissism of insane proportions at the blink of an eye.
After an accident, things only get worse.
What ensues is a terror filled ride that makes Misery look tame in comparison.
I have never read a book before that made me feel like I'm interacting with my own mom again. I can feel the anxiety, the tension, and other emotions as well. The tension only increases as the story goes on.
In short, I loved it!
I read the whole novella in one sitting. So tense, so uncomfortable, with dread building throughout. It actually made my stomach twist up in some places. I definitely recommend it! (FEMINA is up next on my TBR list!)
Frosty, isolation horror at its finest. 'This is Where We Talk Things Out' is one of the most chilling novellas I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It was an uneasy page turner that made my heart race, even while it was aching. Emotional, unsettling, and an absolute must for these cold winter nights.
This is Where We Talk Things Out by Caitlin Marceau is a story that is like a slap to the face, but one that hits you over, and over, and over again.
If you’re looking for a quick and brutal read that will have you gasping at each scene, then this is a great book for you!
This one made me so angry and wildly uncomfortable! I had a pit in my stomach the entire time I was reading. What wonderful work! I cannot wait to read more from this author!
‘This Is Where We Talk Things Out is an immersive, fast paced, thought provoking and nerve-shredding novella that’ll have you screaming: it’s just a book… it’s just a book… it’s just a book. A familial horror which makes The Sawyers family look like a well rounded group of individuals!’ Ross Jeffery - Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of Tome and The Devil’s Pocketbook
